March is officially Brain Injury Awareness Month and it’s a big deal. If you have ever experienced a concussion or seen what it can do to someone, you know it is serious business. Currently, the major terms making headlines are concussion, TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury), and CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy). Most notably, the NFL is taking steps to improve their protocols in concussion prevention and treatment, while realizing the greater need is for proper detection.
Brain injury typically involves some sort of trauma to the head and/or neck that causes damage to the brain itself or the surrounding nerves. For simplicity’s sake, that is a VERY basic statement and does not do this complex condition justice.
You may be reading this thinking to yourself “Why is a chiropractor writing about concussions and not back aches and pain?” If you aren’t aware, we don’t do what traditional chiropractors do. We focus on NeuroStructural Correction.
“But what does that have to do with concussions??!”
I am glad you asked, and the answer is… A LOT.
In the case of concussions, which usually involve some combination of speed and force applied to the delicate structures of the human body, the effect is often a moderate to severe Structural Shift of the spine. What happens as a result is the brain is compromised in its capacity to function and control key body functions, blood and spinal fluid flow is altered, and the spinal joints are no longer in their correct position.
That is where we come in. By carefully examining each patient and taking Digital Structural Radiographs, it is possible to pinpoint the exact location of a Structural Shift. When the problem is located we can then make detailed plan for correcting the problem. Once proper integrity of the spine is regained, it allows the brain to receive the proper information from the spinal joints and the appropriate amounts of oxygen and nutrients from spinal fluid and blood.
While this may sound like a quick fix, it can be a long arduous road. But, it’s the right one in order to achieve lasting results. We are committed to helping those who may be suffering with concussions whether it be a recent event or years later.
