Farm-To-Table, It’s A Lifestyle
By Sam Forbes
Over the years we’ve seen many food fads, diets, and heath trends whose objective is rarely on actual healthy living and more on trimming the fat quickly. Finally there is a movement sweeping our nation whose focus is on a healthy lifestyle. It’s called farm-to-table, also referred to as farm-to-market or farm-to-fork.
Farm-to-table’s focus is on just that: food coming from local farms, gardens, and farmers directly to our table. While conventional produce is often harvested green, coated in wax, and shipped from all over the world to sit in a warehouse for weeks before it reaches the shelves of the grocery store, farm-to-table fruits and vegetables are actually picked fresh from a local source at the peak of ripeness. The benefits of eating local produce go beyond freshness, though. Some foods lose nutrients during shipping, so buying produce directly from a local source ensures the greatest nutritional value. Buying local produce also allows you to become acquainted with the growing practices of each local farm, ensuring that your food is organically grown, without chemical pesticides, and is GMO-free (not genetically modified). Farm-to-table stimulates the local economy by keeping your food dollars within the community, and decreases your environmental impact because food doesn’t have to travel as far to reach your table.
At The Savory Market, farm-to-table is our way of life. We are delighted to offer a variety of local produce, supplied by farmers around the state and as close as within Nassau County. In keeping with the growing season here, our selection may vary, but you can always expect fresh, delicious fruits and vegetables. Stop by our store to see what’s new from our farmers today! We are located at 474380 E SR 200, Fernandina Beach, FL, and are open Tuesday-Saturday from 9 am-6 pm.
