One of the most important parts of our process is determining whether upper cervical chiropractic is actually appropriate for the individual patient.
We do not believe that every symptom originates in the upper cervical spine, and we do not believe that every person who walks into our office needs to become a chiropractic patient.
Our job is to listen to what you have been experiencing, evaluate whether there is a meaningful upper cervical or spinal problem, and determine whether addressing that problem makes sense in your particular situation.
When an Upper Cervical Evaluation May Make Sense
An upper cervical evaluation may be worth considering when your history or symptoms suggest that the head, neck, or craniocervical junction could be contributing to the problem.
Examples may include:
- Persistent or recurring neck pain or stiffness
- Headaches or migraines
- Dizziness, vertigo, or imbalance
- Symptoms beginning after whiplash, a fall, concussion, or other head or neck injury
- Persistent postural or spinal compensation
- Symptoms that have continued despite previous treatment
- A feeling that previous care has focused primarily on symptom relief without identifying why the problem keeps returning
We Look for More Than Symptoms
Symptoms are important, but they are only one part of the picture.
Two patients can experience the same symptom for completely different reasons. Likewise, an underlying spinal problem may sometimes be present before symptoms become severe.
That is why our recommendations are based on the combination of your history, examination, imaging when appropriate, and objective findings—not simply on where you hurt.
What Are We Trying to Determine?
During the evaluation process, we are essentially trying to answer three questions:
1. Is there an identifiable upper cervical or spinal problem?
2. Is there a reasonable relationship between that problem and what you are experiencing?
3. Is it something our approach is designed to address?
If the answer to those questions is yes, upper cervical care may be an appropriate option
When Upper Cervical Care May Not Be the Right First Step
Some symptoms require medical evaluation or another form of care before chiropractic treatment should be considered.
New or rapidly worsening neurological symptoms, significant unexplained weakness or numbness, sudden severe headache, loss of consciousness, chest pain, difficulty speaking, or other concerning symptoms should receive appropriate medical evaluation.
There are also situations in which our examination simply does not identify an upper cervical problem that we believe is clinically meaningful. When that happens, we would rather tell you that than recommend care simply because you came through our door.
What if I Have Already Tried Chiropractic?
Previous chiropractic care does not necessarily tell us whether upper cervical care will or will not be appropriate.
Chiropractic techniques vary significantly in how patients are examined, adjusted, and reassessed. Upper cervical care is highly focused and uses a different decision-making process than many broader spinal approaches.
If previous care provided only temporary relief—or did not address the underlying problem you were concerned about—it may still be worthwhile to determine whether a different approach reveals something clinically relevant.
What if I Have Already Seen Other Specialist?
Many of our patients have already seen physicians, physical therapists, ENTs, neurologists, orthopedic providers, or other healthcare professionals.
Upper cervical care does not have to replace appropriate medical or rehabilitative care. The question is whether the upper cervical spine represents an additional clinically relevant factor that has not yet been adequately evaluated.
The Best Place to Start is a Conversation
You do not need to know whether you are an “upper cervical patient” before coming to Precision Chiropractic.
That is what the consultation and examination process are designed to help determine.
