Upper Cervical Chiropractic for Dizziness and Vertigo in Fernandina Beach
Dizziness can feel different from person to person. Some people experience spinning or vertigo, while others describe rocking, lightheadedness, imbalance, disorientation, or simply feeling “off.”
Because dizziness can have many different causes, the first step is not assuming where it is coming from. At Precision Chiropractic, we evaluate whether dysfunction in the upper cervical region may be one part of the problem and whether upper cervical care is appropriate for you.
Could Your Neck Be Contributing to Your Dizziness?
Balance depends on the brain continuously integrating information from your inner ears, your eyes, and sensory receptors throughout the body. The upper cervical spine plays an important role in this system because the muscles and joints of the upper neck contain a high concentration of proprioceptive receptors that help the brain understand the position and movement of the head.
When information coming from the cervical spine does not match information coming from the visual and vestibular systems, some people may experience dizziness, imbalance, or disorientation. This is sometimes referred to as cervicogenic dizziness.
Cervicogenic dizziness is considered a diagnosis of exclusion, meaning other potential causes of dizziness should be considered rather than assuming the symptoms are coming from the neck.
When Should the Upper Cervical Spine Be Considered?
Dizziness occurring along with neck pain or stiffness
Symptoms beginning after whiplash, a car accident, concussion, fall, or other neck injury
Dizziness that changes with neck position or head movement
Headaches occurring along with dizziness or imbalance
A persistent feeling of unsteadiness or disorientation rather than classic spinning
Symptoms that have continued despite appropriate vestibular or medical evaluation
Our Approach to Dizziness & Vertigo
1. Start With a Consultation
We begin by listening carefully to what you are experiencing. The type of dizziness you feel, when it started, what makes it better or worse, previous injuries, and other symptoms can provide important clues about where the problem may be coming from.
2. Comprehensive Examination & Imaging
If your history suggests that the upper cervical spine may be involved, we perform an objective examination and, when appropriate, advanced imaging to evaluate the relationship between the head and upper cervical spine.
3. Gentle, Precise Upper Cervical Care
When upper cervical care is appropriate, corrections are designed to be gentle and precise without routine twisting or cracking of the neck. We also reassess your progress throughout care rather than assuming that every visit requires the same treatment.
Not All Dizziness Comes From the Neck
Dizziness can have vestibular, neurological, cardiovascular, medication-related, metabolic, visual, and other causes. Conditions such as BPPV, vestibular migraine, Ménière’s disease, and neurological disorders require appropriate evaluation and may require care from an ENT, neurologist, vestibular therapist, primary-care physician, or another healthcare professional.
Our goal is not to replace appropriate medical or vestibular care. It is to determine whether the upper cervical spine may represent an additional factor worth addressing.
