Upper Cervical Chiropractic for Neck Pain & Whiplash

Neck pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints, but the reason it persists can vary considerably from one person to another.

For some people, symptoms begin after an obvious injury such as a motor vehicle accident, sports collision, fall, or concussion. For others, neck pain develops gradually and becomes increasingly persistent over time.

At Precision Chiropractic, our goal is not simply to identify where your neck hurts. We want to determine whether there is an underlying structural or functional problem within the cervical spine—particularly at the craniocervical junction—that may be contributing to the problem.

What Happens During Whiplash?

Whiplash commonly occurs when the head and neck are rapidly accelerated and decelerated, such as during a rear-end motor vehicle collision.

This sudden movement can place significant stress on the joints, muscles, ligaments, and other tissues of the cervical spine.

Symptoms may include:

  • Neck pain or stiffness
  • Headaches
  • Reduced neck motion
  • Shoulder or upper-back discomfort
  • Dizziness or imbalance
  • Muscle tightness or spasm
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Symptoms that worsen with activity or prolonged positions

Some symptoms appear immediately, while others may develop over the hours or days following an injury.

Why the Upper Cervical Region Matters After an Injury

The relationship between the head and upper cervical spine is particularly important following trauma because this region supports and controls a large amount of head and neck movement.

The upper cervical joints and deep muscles also provide the nervous system with important information about head position and movement.

Following an injury, changes in joint mechanics, muscle activity, movement patterns, or sensory input from the neck may contribute to persistent symptoms or compensation elsewhere in the spine.

This does not mean every person with whiplash has an upper cervical problem. It means this region deserves careful evaluation when the history and examination suggest that it may be involved.

Why Can Neck Pain Continue After the Initial Injury?

Pain does not always disappear simply because the initial inflammation or tissue irritation settles down.

Following an injury, the body may adapt through changes in:

  • Muscle activity
  • Joint motion
  • Head position
  • Posture
  • Movement patterns
  • Spinal loading
  • Protective guarding

Over time, these adaptations can become part of the ongoing problem.

This is one reason our examination looks beyond pain alone. We want to understand whether a persistent mechanical or functional problem remains after the original injury.

We Evaluate the Whole Spine

Although our adjusting procedures are highly focused on the upper cervical spine, we do not view the neck in isolation.

The head sits at the top of the spinal column, and changes in cervical mechanics can influence how the shoulders, thoracic spine, lower back, and pelvis compensate below.

Likewise, injuries involving other parts of the spine may affect how the neck functions.

Our goal is to identify which findings appear clinically meaningful rather than automatically adjusting every area that feels uncomfortable.

Our Approach to Neck Pain & Whiplash

1. Understand the Injury

We begin with a detailed history.

We want to understand:

  • How the injury occurred
  • The direction and severity of the impact
  • When symptoms began
  • Whether symptoms have changed over time
  • Previous injuries or accidents
  • What treatment you have already received
  • What activities now aggravate the problem

The mechanism of injury can provide important information about which structures may have been stressed.

2. Comprehensive Examination

We evaluate the cervical spine, upper cervical region, neurological function, posture, movement, and other findings relevant to your individual situation.

Our goal is to identify patterns that may help explain why symptoms are continuing.

3. Advanced Imaging When Appropriate

When clinically indicated, advanced imaging allows us to evaluate your anatomy and the relationship between the head and cervical spine in greater detail.

Following trauma, imaging may also help us determine whether additional medical or diagnostic evaluation is appropriate before chiropractic care is considered.

4. Gentle, Precise Upper Cervical Correction

If we identify an upper cervical problem that appears clinically meaningful, a precise correction may be recommended.

Upper cervical corrections are performed gently and without routine twisting or cracking of the neck.

5. Reassessment

After a correction, we reassess.

We want to know whether the objective findings identified during the examination are changing rather than simply assuming another adjustment is necessary.

The Goal Is More Than Temporary Pain Relief

Reducing pain is important, but our goal is not simply to make the neck feel better for a few hours.

We are trying to determine whether there is an underlying mechanical or functional problem that may be contributing to why symptoms continue or repeatedly return.

When we identify such a problem, our objective is to address it and monitor whether it is improving.

What If Rehabilitation Is Needed?

An upper cervical correction does not replace appropriate rehabilitation.

Some injuries also require mobility work, strengthening, balance or sensorimotor rehabilitation, physical therapy, medical management, or other forms of care.

When additional treatment is appropriate, our goal is to help the patient address the complete problem rather than pretending that one intervention should solve everything.

When Neck Pain Requires Medical Evaluation

Certain symptoms following a neck injury require prompt medical evaluation.

Seek urgent medical care for symptoms such as:

  • New or worsening weakness
  • Significant numbness or loss of sensation
  • Difficulty walking
  • Loss of bowel or bladder control
  • Severe or rapidly worsening headache
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Difficulty speaking or swallowing
  • Severe symptoms following significant trauma

If there is concern for fracture, instability, neurological injury, or another condition outside the scope of chiropractic care, appropriate medical evaluation should come first.

Could an Upper Cervical Problem Be Contributing?

If you have persistent neck pain following an accident, whiplash, fall, sports injury, or other trauma, an upper cervical evaluation may help determine whether an underlying problem remains.

Our goal is to identify what appears clinically relevant and determine whether upper cervical care is appropriate for your individual situation.

I started seeing Dr. Lin almost two years ago and the difference he has made with my headaches is truly remarkable. I had migraines often when I first started seeing him, and although my headaches haven’t fully subsided that’s partially due the physical position I’m in while doing my work; however, I find going once a week is incredibly helpful and makes it manageable. I can feel when I need an adjustment right away, and I immediately feel better every time. My quality of life has changed and it’s nice to have someone I fully trust that helps keep my head on straight so I can give care to my patients too! I’m grateful to the entire staff for always being so kind, welcoming, and working with my schedule! Thank you 🙏

If you are struggling with cervical, back or shoulders issues I highly recommend Dr. Lin. I am very thankful to have found him. What really sets DrLin apart is his approach to chiropractic care. Rather than the traditional “cracking” or adjustments, he uses a specialized tool, a more scientific targeted approach. I have received tremendous improvement in my back pain. His staff is equally impressive. They are professional, kind and welcoming. I would absolutely recommend Dr. Lin and his team to any one looking for knowledgeable and compassionate chiropractic care. If you’re pregnant, go see Dr. Lin! He is Webster certified and helped keep my body aligned throughout pregnancy so my baby could stay in an optimal position. A few times she shifted, and after an adjustment she’d be head down again within hours. I even went into labor about two hours after my last adjustment! Dr. Lin is so calm and gentle, and his entire team is wonderful. It honestly felt like visiting friends every week.
