MAKING THE CASE FOR A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP

May 19, 2016 By Dr. Kevin Lin

IMG_5476

In modern society the priority is productivity. How much can we get done in a day? What can we accomplish? As a result, rest and sleep are usually neglected. How often do we hear of people bragging about needing only 4-5 hours of sleep?

Unfortunately, our understanding of the brain and nervous system tells us this is unhealthy.

Let me explain why. The brain has its own sewer system called the Glympathic system. It is similar to the lymphatic system. It’s main goal is to maintain the delicate environment our brain needs to function properly by removing metabolic waste and toxins. During waking hours, the Glympathic system is mostly inactive.

However, while sleeping, the Glympathic system canals open up by an astounding 60%!

The Cerebrospinal Fluid can flow more freely through out the Glympathic system while you are asleep sweeping away the proteins and waste that are tied to many Neurodegenerative diseases of the brain. When this flow is disrupted it allows build up and plaque in the brain.

The early results of research in this area show that sleeping on your SIDE is the best at opening up the Glympathic system. In rodents, 25% more CSF flow is seen in a side laying position. (good news side sleepers!)

Why does this matter to us at Precision Chiropractic?

Structural abnormalities within the spine also prevent proper flow of CSF in the head and neck. Instead of a steady flow, structural abnormalities cause turbulent flows that causes damage to the sensitive tissues in the Brain and central Nervous system.

Correcting and stabilizing the underlying structural abnormality allows the CSF to return to a normal state.

Combining a good night’s rest with a specific correction of the spine leads to a healthy brain!

How WE know when YOU need an adjustment?

May 12, 2016 By Dr. Kevin Lin

The-Neuro-FunctionalScan

How do the doctors at Precision Chiropractic determine when you need to be adjusted?

At Precision Chiropractic, we focus on identifying and correcting Structural Abnormalities in the spine. In particular, in this article we will be talking about how we know when a correction is needed on a day-to-day basis in our office. Using the latest diagnostic tools available we are able to determine the characteristics of the Structural Abnormality.

Allow me to give you an example of what I am talking about: A scientist, when identifying diseases, looks for certain patterns, behaviors, signs, and symptoms. For instance, in diabetes, common red flags are frequent urination, tiredness, lack of concentration, and slow-healing wounds. In addition, tests such as the Fasting Glucose Test, Oral Glucose Tolerance test, and Hemoglobin A1c Test are used to screen and diagnose diabetes.

Similarly, abnormal Structural Shifts have certain patterns, behaviors, signs, and symptoms. Once you understand the disease then you can look for the clues or indicators.

Common Signs and Symptoms include:
1. Headaches/Migraines

2. Neck and Shoulder discomfort and Pain

3. Abnormal Head tilt and/or rotation

For Structural shifts in the spine, there are four primary indicators:
1. Secondary Postural Compensations

2. Abnormal Structural Findings on Digital Spinographs

3. Automatic System Imbalance

4. Friction detected with the NeuroFunctional Scanner

Readings taken with the NeuroFunctional Scanner allow the doctor to detect friction and constriction to the nerves caused by the underlying Structural Shift in the spine. This invaluable high-tech tool allows the doctor to determine whether a patient needs an adjustment, and afterwards, if the adjustment was successful in correcting the Structural Shift.

Unlike conventional chiropractic where spinal manipulations occur on every visit, at Precision Chiropractic, we use the latest advances in technology to ensure that when we make a correction, it’s at the right place and time. This is essential for the stabilization of the spine as well as achieving a long-term solution for our patients.

Would your scab heal if you picked on it every day?

It’s time for a more scientific method.

Call our office and come to one of our introductory presentations or schedule a Complimentary Consultation to find out more about Structural Abnormalities and how they might be affecting your health.

Are x-rays really necessary?

April 11, 2016 By Dr. Kevin Lin

xraysnecessary

Every so often, a prospective patient wants to know if they really need x-rays.  This is an important question for us to address, and certainly a fair one to be asked since not all chiropractors use x-ray in their practice.  X-rays are a standard part of our NeuroStructural Chiropractic examination, just as they are standard procedure for a dental visit.  In a dental setting, patients understand that periodic x-rays of their teeth give the doctor valuable information about the structure, alignment and overall health of the teeth.  A dentist’s x-rays eliminate any need for guesswork, and actually increase the safety of the patient and the quality of care.  At Precision Chiropractic it’s no different.

Most patients’ initial concern regarding x-rays is the radiation – they don’t want the exposure.  This is, of course, a legitimate concern, so let’s take a minute to address it.  Radiation from x-rays used for diagnostic purposes (as we use them in our practice) is measured in milliseiverts (mSv), and the dose a person receives is called the effective dose.  Different tissues in the body have varying degrees of sensitivity to radiation exposure, and the term effective dose is used as an average risk over the entire body.

To provide a frame of reference, we are exposed to radiation from natural sources all the time.  The average person growing up in the U.S. receives an effective dose of about 3mSv per year from cosmic radiation as well as naturally present radioactive materials.  Altitude also plays a role, but the largest source of background radiation exposure comes from radon gas in our homes.  Much like a cut on your finger, your body tissues can and do heal from the “wound” created by an x-ray, as long as the exposure is neither too large nor too frequent.  Applying this to our practice, the specific NeuroStructural views we take of the neck amount to 0.2mSv. To put this into perspective, it’s about the equivalent of just over 3 weeks’ worth of what you’d normally be exposed to from your natural surroundings.

You might still be wondering why we even need x-rays in the first place.  No two spines are shaped exactly alike, and no two spines move in exactly the same way.  In fact, asymmetry in our bodies is the rule rather than the exception, making relying on our sense of touch alone a gamble (and one we’re not willing to take).  We use state-of-the art high-frequency digital x-ray technology in our practice, which minimizes the exposure to our patients while providing us with the highest resolution images.  We utilize these images to customize care for each of our patients, while maintaining the highest standard of safety and quality.

Spinal Hygiene 101: PLANKS

March 23, 2016 By Dr. Kevin Lin

IMG_5476

Starting an exercise routine can sometimes be very intimidating and complex but today we are going to talk about a simple exercise that can be done at home with no equipment or require a lot of time.

Planks look so simple that one might assume it’s not doing anything at all but don’t be fooled. This exercise works out your abs, obliques, hips, and back. It is one of the best exercises you can do for core conditioning.

So what is a plank? A plank is where you hold the trunk of your body( off the ground) in a straight line.

plank

Here are the instructions from the American Council on Exercise

  • Hold your elbows directly under your shoulders and place your wrists in line with your elbows.
  • Push your body up into your upper back and hold your chin close to your neck (like you’re holding an egg between your chin and your throat).
  • In this position, brace your abdominals—contract them like expecting a punch in your stomach, squeeze your gluteal (tailbone) and thigh muscles simultaneously while continuing to breathe normally.
  • Hold a plank at least 20 to 30 seconds. (When using correct form, it is not necessary to hold it for longer than this amount of time.) Rest for approximately one minute and repeat three to five more times.
  • Start doing the plank using your elbows and toes (feel free to drop to your knees if necessary) and progress up to a high plank when you feel you have developed the necessary strength.
  • Make sure to pull in your bellybutton while you are in the Plank position!

TOP THREE BENEFITS OF PLANKS

  1. Reduces low back pain
  2. Increased spinal flexibility
  3. Improves balance and posture

A FEW EXTRA TIPS

  1. don’t hold your breath while you are doing planks
  2. make sure your elbows and hands are shoulder width apart
  3. holding the position too long ( proper form is more important then length of time)

Start doing planks today to protect your structural corrections and to improve your spinal hygiene!

The pain in your jaw could be caused by the pain in your neck: The connection between the neck and TMJ

March 17, 2016 By Dr. Kevin Lin

tmj
A common condition that has been showing up more and more lately in my practice is temporomandibular joint dysfunction, or TMJD. Everyone has had the occasional jaw pain when taking a big bite of a sandwich or crunching down on a hard candy, but people with chronic jaw pain can suffer terribly.
TMJ problems arise in the joint that connects your jaw to the rest of your head.  Normal motion of this joint is a non-negotiable when it comes to having a jaw that functions normally. When correct jaw motion is compromised, the impact can be severe and can cause a wide variety of problems, including:
  • Headaches
  • Neck pain
  • Teeth grinding
  • Sharp & stabbing jaw pain
  • Clenching
  • Painful clicking
  • And much more
Generally speaking, problems with the TMJ arise from two sources:
  1. Muscle dysfunction – the jaw muscles (masseter, temporalis & pterygoids) become imbalanced and dysfunctional, leading to pain and abnormal movement patterns.
  2. Joint dysfunction – the TMJ is a complex joint.  The disc within the joint can shift, the joint can degenerate, and the extremely sensitive nerve endings surrounding the joint can become inflamed.
To understand why the muscles of the jaw become dysfunctional, it’s important to understand what controls the muscles of the joint.  Every muscle in your body, from your heart to your bicep to your achy back muscles, is controlled by a nerve.  The muscles of the jaw are under the control of the Trigeminal Nerve, which is one of 12 specialized nerves known as Cranial Nerves.  Cranial nerves are unique because they don’t originate from the spine.  Instead, they originate from the brain and brainstem and exit out of the skull.  Because of this, issues with the cranial nerves are usually a sign of a problem at the brainstem.
People with TMJD typically don’t have isolated jaw pain – they often have neck pain and headaches as well.  Interestingly, a search of PubMed shows numerous studies outlining an increased occurrence of TMJD in patients who have suffered a whiplash injury or other trauma to the head or neck.  Because of the close relationship of the Trigeminal Nerve and the vertebrae in the neck, the Atlas Displacement Complex can create the conditions under which abnormal pain signals can occur.
How does NeuroStructural Chiropractic address this?
At Precision Chiropractic, we identify the primary Structural Abnormality that has occurred in the spine.  In the majority of cases we see, this Structural Shift has occurred at the topmost vertebra in the neck, the atlas, due to its unique shape and biomechanics.  This specific area of the spine is intimately connected to key structures of jaw function and can be the culprit in many TMJD cases.  Our goal is to correct and stabilize this area so that the nerves can function normally again.  We end up co-managing many cases with dentists who focus on TMJ treatment for these exact reasons, which has been of tremendous benefit to the patient.
Take the time to schedule a complimentary consultation to find out if a NeuroStructural Chiropractic approach can be a solution for your TMJ issues, or supplement the dental treatment you are already receiving.

Head’s Up! Understanding Head Injuries

March 9, 2016 By Dr. Kevin Lin

March is officially Brain Injury Awareness Month and it’s a big deal. If you have ever experienced a concussion or seen what it can do to someone, you know it is serious business. Currently, the major terms making headlines are concussion, TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury), and CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy). Most notably, the NFL is taking steps to improve their protocols in concussion prevention and treatment, while realizing the greater need is for proper detection.
Brain injury typically involves some sort of trauma to the head and/or neck that causes damage to the brain itself or the surrounding nerves. For simplicity’s sake, that is a VERY basic statement and does not do this complex condition justice.
You may be reading this thinking to yourself “Why is a chiropractor writing about concussions and not back aches and pain?” If you aren’t aware, we don’t do what traditional chiropractors do. We focus on NeuroStructural Correction.
“But what does that have to do with concussions??!”
I am glad you asked, and the answer is… A LOT.
In the case of concussions, which usually involve some combination of speed and force applied to the delicate structures of the human body, the effect is often a moderate to severe Structural Shift of the spine. What happens as a result is the brain is compromised in its capacity to function and control key body functions, blood and spinal fluid flow is altered, and the spinal joints are no longer in their correct position.
That is where we come in. By carefully examining each patient and taking Digital Structural Radiographs, it is possible to pinpoint the exact location of a Structural Shift. When the problem is located we can then make detailed plan for correcting the problem. Once proper integrity of the spine is regained, it allows the brain to receive the proper information from the spinal joints and the appropriate amounts of oxygen and nutrients from spinal fluid and blood.
While this may sound like a quick fix, it can be a long arduous road. But, it’s the right one in order to achieve lasting results. We are committed to helping those who may be suffering with concussions whether it be a recent event or years later.
If you are interested in finding out more, we would love to make the time for a complimentary consultation to show you what we do and how we can help.
VERY IMPORTANT: Please share this with your youth or High School coach!

An Uncommon Solution to Your Common Health Problems

March 2, 2016 By Dr. Kevin Lin

An Uncommon Solution to Common Health Problems
stat
More and more it seems like people all around are suffering from some type of chronic health condition, so I decided to dig up some current related information. The stats on a few of the most common ailments in America are staggering:

  • Approximately 45 million Americans suffer from headaches (tension, migraine, and cluster types).
  • Approximately 65 million Americans suffer from back pain, which is the second leading cause for medical visits.
  • Scientists estimate fibromyalgia affects 5 million Americans, with the annual average medical cost for each person approaching $6,000.
  • Approximately 40 million Americans suffer from arthritis, and the financial burden for the loss of work productivity is estimated to be upwards of 130 billion dollars a year.
  • The CDC estimates over 70 million Americans have hypertension and its cost weighs in at $46 billion in medical expenses, lost time at work, and medications. In addition, hypertension is a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure.
Across the board, these conditions are becoming more and more rampant in our country. The common solutions and treatment options are simply not working. Most visits to conventional chiropractors are unfortunately no different. Although there might be short term improvements in range of motion, muscle spasms, and pain, the end results are the same and the problem persists.   At Precision Chiropractic, we provide an uncommon solution to your common health problems.
Structural Shifts in the spine cause compensations that cascade throughout the spine, leading to degeneration, muscle spasm, and abnormal biomechanics. Structural Shifts also create friction within your nervous system, your body’s network of communication that regulates functions such as blood pressure, the sensing of pain, digestion, and inflammation. We focus on pinpointing and correcting these Structural Shifts so the body can heal and recover for a long term solution.
At Precision Chiropractic, we look beyond the temporary nature of symptomatic treatment and we identify the underlying cause of your health problems. This is not a one size fits all approach. However, if there is moderate to severe Structural Shift that has occurred in your spine, more often than not, that is the underlying cause to the laundry list of Secondary Conditions discussed above.

Don’t be like the millions of Americans suffering daily. There is a better, uncommon solution to your health problems.

Come in for a Complimentary Consultation if your solution is the right one for you.

The Secret To Accruing Health And Getting A Leg Up On The Competition

February 15, 2016 By Dr. Kevin Lin

finishlinebike
Every day we make decisions that either stand to benefit our bodies or serve as a detriment. From what we eat, to how much water we drink, getting to the gym, and our mental outlook, these decisions build on each other to shape your health destiny.

The secret is not a special diet, a magical exercise regimen, or medical treatment. The secret is something that is inside of us since the beginning. What am I talking about? Your innate, inborn ability to be healthy.

As an example, if you get a paper cut, what happens? Without having to give it a single thought, your body organizes to defend itself from invading microbes and repairs the cells in the injured area. For most of us this is something we take for granted, but this innate ability is always on the job helping us to digest our food, balance our chemistry, regulate our blood pressure, and provide defenses against dangerous invaders.

The secret, then, is to empower this AUTOMATIC ability and to eliminate any friction or obstruction to its function.

Structural Shifts (otherwise known as the underlying structural abnormality in the spine) create secondary structural compensations throughout the entire skeletal system. In turn, this also creates friction/obstruction within the central nervous system and prevents YOUR Automatic System from functioning properly.

Get ahead by giving your body the opportunity to function properly over an extended period of time. Build your health savings instead of drawing it down. Get started now with a COMPLIMENTARY consultation to find out more about how we can help you or your loved ones.

More Brain than Heart? ( The other side of the story about Hypertension)

February 2, 2016 By Dr. Kevin Lin

hypertension
High blood pressure is a common condition in which the force of the blood against the walls of your arteries is too great. Blood pressure is determined by the amount of blood your heart pumps and the amount of resistance to the blood being pushed through your arteries. The more blood your heart pumps and the narrower your arteries, the higher your blood pressure.

You can have high blood pressure (hypertension) for years without any symptoms. Uncontrolled hypertension puts you at an increased risk of serious health problems, including heart attack and stroke. High blood pressure typically develops over the course of many years and, fortunately, can be easily detected. Once you know you have high blood pressure, you’re able to make changes to get it managed.

But what if there’s a missing piece to the puzzle? It sounds strange that your spine could be connected to hypertension, but several research studies have shown that it may be the case. Structural Shifts of the spine, particularly in the upper cervical area, have been found to cause a decrease in blood supply to the brainstem and an increase in systemic blood pressure.

If you’re familiar with scientific research, you’ll know that a randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled study is about the most unbiased you can get. A study of this nature was done to see how correcting the Atlas Displacement Complex would affect blood pressure. The results of the study were remarkable – over the course of the 8 weeks the patients were observed, those in the group that received the chiropractic adjustment saw as much improvement in their blood pressure as the group that took two different antihypertensive medications.

At Precision Chiropractic, outcomes are extremely important to us. This is evident in our process and procedures.  In other words, we’re keeping score.  We know there is no “high blood pressure adjustment”, and this is exactly why we measure each patient’s status and need for an adjustment on each visit. What we do know for sure is that helping our patients to not only correct, but also stabilize their adjustments, leads to the best possible outcomes. Maybe you’re tired of all the medications, or maybe you’re just looking for a different approach.  Either way, our complimentary consultation is the perfect way for us to get to know you, for you to get to know us, and to see if a Structural Shift of the spine may be contributing to your hypertension.

Is there such a thing as a “NORMAL” headache?

January 18, 2016 By Dr. Kevin Lin

IMG_5156

“It’s OK, it’s just my normal headache”

As someone who grew up experiencing fairly regular headaches, at one time I may have found some truth in this statement.  Each time, I’d turn to a bottle of Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen, and then turn into bed until relief came.

Many years later, I’ve come to realize there is no such thing as a “normal headache” (or migraine for that matter).  Each time I popped those two tablets of “Vitamin I”, I instinctually knew that even though it would bring relief in the short term, those pills were not doing a thing to correct the cause of these recurring episodes.

There are many headache types – tension headaches are the most common and feel like a hat that fits too tight; migraines usually come along with a host of other unwelcome symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and visual disturbances.  Modern medicine has struggled to nail down a cause for many headache types, though much research leans towards a combination of blood flow obstruction and impaired neurological function.

If you’re wondering what this has to do with NeuroStructural Chiropractic, allow me to explain.  Our goal is to locate the primary underlying Structural Shift in your spine (and not just the many compensations).  In our experience at Precision Chiropractic, 9 times out of 10, that primary Structural Shift occurs at the very top of the neck, just underneath the skull.  The two vertebrae most often to blame are the Atlas (C1) and Axis (C2) because of their unique shapes and biomechanics.

A misalignment, or vertebral subluxation, in this area can have very negative effects on both blood flow and normal neurological function – both culprits in the genesis of headaches and migraines.  In the case of my stubborn headaches, NeuroStructural Correction was the answer.  Finding, adjusting, and stabilizing the Structural Shift in my spine was the lasting solution I had been looking for.

Instead of focusing on temporary pain relief or reduction of muscle spasm, our purpose at Precision Chiropractic is to correct and stabilize that primary shift for the long-term, which is why we can achieve such positive and lasting results with our patients.  Have you been living with your “normal headache” for too long?  Maybe it’s time to get to the bottom of it.

I started seeing Dr. Lin almost two years ago and the difference he has made with my headaches is truly remarkable. I had migraines often when I first started seeing him, and although my headaches haven’t fully subsided that’s partially due the physical position I’m in while doing my work; however, I find going once a week is incredibly helpful and makes it manageable. I can feel when I need an adjustment right away, and I immediately feel better every time. My quality of life has changed and it’s nice to have someone I fully trust that helps keep my head on straight so I can give care to my patients too! I’m grateful to the entire staff for always being so kind, welcoming, and working with my schedule! Thank you 🙏
