Children and Neurostructural Care

November 12, 2015 By Dr. Kevin Lin

bfqote

The most difficult part of the NeuroStrucutral cases we accept in our office is not whether we can make a single correction. It is whether the body has the ability to hold and stabilize that correction in order to make a long-term sustainable solution.

Patients usually come in with structural and physiological baggage from having a Structural Shift that has been left uncorrected for a long period of time. This makes it harder for patients to HOLD their adjustments.

Most commonly, we see Secondary Conditions such as disc degeneration, spinal arthritis, headaches, neuropathy, and muscle pain as a result of unchecked and uncorrected Structural Shifts in the spine.

This is exactly why we check children in our office for underlying Structural Shifts.

Most children have very little baggage and can have easier corrections then adults who have a history of degeneration and detrimental muscle memory.

Children that get checked avoid most of the Secondary Conditions that afflict our adult patients

AND

They need FEWER adjustments and hold their corrections for LONGER periods of time.

Our specific correction is tailored to each patient – adult or child – and as a result is safe and effective.

The most common signs for children with a Structural Shift are digestive issues (constipation/diarrhea/reflux), difficulty concentrating, and headaches.

As Benjamin Franklin once said, “An ounce of Prevention is worth a Pound of Cure.”

Under the weather or ABOVE it?!

October 19, 2015 By Dr. Kevin Lin

underthewaether

Fall has arrived and with the cooler temperatures, many people have been asking us about ways they can avoid the usual aches, pains, and ailments that usually accompany the shift in weather.  In our daily lives we are bombarded by a lot of information about the best methods to keep our kids healthy at school, fight off a cold or cough, or avoid getting the flu.  Were we supposed to feed that fever or starve it?!  How do we know if our body is working as hard as it can to stay healthy?

Bolstering immune function is important to everyone – from infant to elderly, everyone benefits from an immune system that is running optimally.  At Precision Chiropractic, we receive calls all the time from parents and patients asking if they should reschedule their appointment because they have the sniffles or a tickle in their throat.  Our answer is always the same – if you’re able to make it in to get checked, then you should.

This may seem counter-intuitive, but allow me to explain.  Since our focus is on NeuroStructural Corrective chiropractic care, our goal is not just placing a Band-Aid over a bigger problem – it’s to make a lasting correction to an underlying Structural Shift of the spine.  Oftentimes, this Structural Shift is responsible for creating secondary conditions, or symptoms, including feeling run down or getting sick more often than those around you.

In order for the immune system to work at its highest capacity, the nervous system must also be free to work at its highest capacity, since the nervous system governs the function of all the other systems of the body.  Because we perform a specific NeuroStructural analysis on each and every visit, we are able to know without any doubt if a Structural Shift, or Subluxation, is preventing your nervous system from working at its best.  If YOU were feeling under the weather, wouldn’t you like to KNOW that your immune system was fighting as hard as it possibly could to get you back to normal?

Structure and Function

Structure and Function

Conventional chiropractors are well known for their goals of decreasing muscles spasm, increasing range of motion, and temporarily relieving pain through spinal manipulations. The focus of a conventional chiropractic approach is mainly structural. However, the NeuroStructural care at Precision Chiropractic also addresses the function of the body with specific NeuroStructural Corrections.

If you ask any engineer or architect they will tell you that structure determines function. It’s no different in the human body – our hands are designed with opposable thumbs for grasping objects, our teeth have different designs based upon where in the mouth they are located to perform different jobs like tearing or grinding of food, and even on a cellular level, the shape of our individual proteins determines if they will function as a transporter of molecules, control growth, or even transmit nerve impulses.

Structural abnormalities in the spine certainly do cause secondary structural conditions such as muscle soreness, back pain, abnormal cracking/popping, and degenerative disc disease, but they also cause secondary functional conditions such as irregular bowel movements, migraines, high blood pressure, fibromyalgia, and fatigue.

At our office we use the most current scientific tools available to identify and correct the underlying structural abnormality in your spine. And, once it is corrected we help you take care of that correction so it won’t come back!

When does care end?!

September 14, 2015 By Dr. Kevin Lin

When does care end?

As a Chiropractor I meet a lot of people in the community with the question, “ If I go to a Chiropractor, do I have to go for the rest of my life?”

This is a very good question and most CONVENTIONAL chiropractors would say yes.Lifetime care is suggested in maintaining a healthy spine.

While I agree that maintaining a healthy spine is ideal, I would say visits for a lifetime are not necessary. As a NeuroStructural Chiropractor, It is my job to provide a lasting and sustainable correction instead of band-aid type manipulations.

At the end of our recommended care plan the goal is to reach a stabilized correction for each patient’s specific underlying shift. To keep track of improvements, all of our patients do a thorough re-exam to see if progress has been made since the beginning of care.

In other words, WE ARE KEEPING SCORE. NO MORE ENDLESS TREATMENTS!

Why does my neck crack and pop?

September 1, 2015 By Dr. Kevin Lin

girraffe neck

Why does my neck crack and pop?

When you hear a pop or a crack in your neck it is actually joint fluid that is changing into gas. It is a chemical change, NOT the physical rubbing of two bones together. When a joint is stretched, the pressure changes and causes the fluid to change into gas.

AGAIN, it is NOT two bones rubbing together!

The technical term for this noise is called cavitation. For the most part cavitations are normal and can happen during day to day activities such as stretching in the morning.

However, if these cavitations are happening frequently and are associated with pain, headaches or tension in the shoulders, it could be a sign of a bigger problem. Most often, ligament laxity (instability) is the reason for abnormal cavitations in the neck. This is why it is important that you don’t try to manipulate yourself. You could only be contributing to the problem!

As a NeuroStructural Chiropractor, we use state of the art tools to identify the cause of ligament instability so we can provide care that will stabilize the neck and spine.

No more cracking and popping!

Leave well enough alone

June 4, 2015 By Dr. Kevin Lin

choices-1

In the modern age of medicine we have more options for treatments than ever before in human history. But do more options lead to better choices? From general physicians to specialists you can find anything you want as a consumer.  Conventional chiropractors also play a role in this modern medical landscape by offering temporary relief for neck and back aches.  But who is offering the option of prudence? The saying “less is more” might be truer than ever before in a world where there are more medications, more surgeries, more interventions, more adjustments.  Is there a time and place for medications, surgeries, and other types of interventions?  Yes, of course, but the important point is knowing when and where.

At Precision Chiropractic, our goal is to identify and stabilize the underlying shift in the spine. Instead of adjusting 4-5 different vertebrae on every visit, our diagnostic tools allow us to identify the specific vertebrae that need to be adjusted. More importantly, the same tools allow us to know when a vertebra is still in place and when an adjustment is NOT necessary.  If the bone were in the correct position, an adjustment would be worst thing that could happen.  Is the goal to get as many adjustments as possible? Or is it to have the underlying shift corrected AND stabilized?  Does your wound heal quicker if you pick at your scab?

My advice? Leave well enough alone.

Farm- To- Table, It’s A Lifestyle

Farm-To-Table, It’s A Lifestyle

By Sam Forbes

savorymarketveg

Over the years we’ve seen many food fads, diets, and heath trends whose objective is rarely on actual healthy living and more on trimming the fat quickly.  Finally there is a movement sweeping our nation whose focus is on a healthy lifestyle.  It’s called farm-to-table, also referred to as farm-to-market or farm-to-fork.

Farm-to-table’s focus is on just that: food coming from local farms, gardens, and farmers directly to our table.  While conventional produce is often harvested green, coated in wax, and shipped from all over the world to sit in a warehouse for weeks before it reaches the shelves of the grocery store, farm-to-table fruits and vegetables are actually picked fresh from a local source at the peak of ripeness.  The benefits of eating local produce go beyond freshness, though. Some foods lose nutrients during shipping, so buying produce directly from a local source ensures the greatest nutritional value.  Buying local produce also allows you to become acquainted with the growing practices of each local farm, ensuring that your food is organically grown, without chemical pesticides, and is GMO-free (not genetically modified).  Farm-to-table stimulates the local economy by keeping your food dollars within the community, and decreases your environmental impact because food doesn’t have to travel as far to reach your table.

At The Savory Market, farm-to-table is our way of life.  We are delighted to offer a variety of local produce, supplied by farmers around the state and as close as within Nassau County.  In keeping with the growing season here, our selection may vary, but you can always expect fresh, delicious fruits and vegetables.  Stop by our store to see what’s new from our farmers today!  We are located at 474380 E SR 200, Fernandina Beach, FL, and are open Tuesday-Saturday from 9 am-6 pm.

Condition Spotlight: Hypertension

July 14, 2014 By Dr. Kevin Lin

Condition Spotlight: Hypertension

It is estimated by the Center of Disease Control that Hypertension cost the United States $47.5 billion yearly in health care services. The CDC also estimates that one third of Americans have high blood pressure and another one third of Americans have pre-hypertension.  So if you do the math the majority of Americans have or will have hypertension.  The most common method of controlling hypertension is via chemical means or medication. It is estimated that 7 in 10 U.S. adults that have hypertension use medication to treat the condition.  Medications are especially usefully for emergency situations where immediate care is necessary. However, a recent study done by the Cochrane Collaboration Hypertension group, indicate that long term use of medication failed to show long term benefits for patients.

This makes sense IF your hypertension is caused by an obstruction to your autonomic nervous system.  A medication can temporarily affect blood pressure but it cannot undo a physical obstruction to the autonomic nervous system. The autonomic nervous system does many things in your body particularly the functions that happen “automatically” including your blood pressure.  For some people that have hypertension, the problem isn’t hypertension itself but a poorly functioning autonomic nervous system.
At Precision Chiropractic, we focus on the relationship between your spine and nervous system, and how its effects how you live, work, and play. We look for abnormal shifts in the spine that can cause obstruction to your nervous system, once we find those abnormal shifts; we correct and stabilize those shifts so that our patients can have a sustainable long term solution to their health conditions including hypertension. If you are interested in finding out if your hypertension might be a secondary condition to an abnormal shift in your spine give us a call at 904.310.0064 or visit our website at www.precisionchirofl.com

Stressed out?! Find out why stress is not your enemy.

June 20, 2014 By Dr. Kevin Lin

StressFernandinabeach The number one stress on your body is not traffic, family or your job. Most people don’t recognize this stress because it is constant, beginning with our first breath outside the womb. Without this stress our bodies would be weak, our bones brittle. You probably have guessed that the stress that I am talking about is gravity. Astronauts that return from space have a seven to ten day recovery period because of their time in zero gravity. In just that short amount of time without gravity, astronauts lose calcium from their bones and mass from their muscles and equilibrium. All of this to say, without stress our bodies would be weak. Stress is not our enemy and in most cases stress even makes us stronger. Chiropractorfernandinabeach Let’s use running as an example. The physical stress from running forces the heart to work harder. Your body, through a process called anastomosis, responds by creating more blood vessels around the heart so that it can be supplied with more oxygen. Without the stress from the cardiovascular workout there would be no need for a more complex network of blood vessels around the heart. So which heart is healthier? Is it the one with more oxygen supply or the one with fewer blood vessels? When our body is functioning properly it can meet the demands placed upon it. It would make sense then to focus on not stress itself but our body’s ability to adapt to stress.

What can we do to help our body adapt to stress?

1. Get a good night’s rest. ( Allows your body to recharge)

2. Eat nutritious foods. (Gives your body needed building blocks to recover from stress)

3. Drink lots of water. (It is the key component in many of our bodily functions)

4. Make sure your nervous system is functioning properly.

At Precision Chiropractic, we focus on the relationship between the spine and the nervous system. When there is an abnormal shift in the spine it can cause an obstruction to the nervous system. For your body to adapt to stress properly, the nervous system must be able to organize the body to respond properly to the demands put upon it.

By keeping the nervous system healthy, you don’t need to be stressed about stress.

I started seeing Dr. Lin almost two years ago and the difference he has made with my headaches is truly remarkable. I had migraines often when I first started seeing him, and although my headaches haven’t fully subsided that’s partially due the physical position I’m in while doing my work; however, I find going once a week is incredibly helpful and makes it manageable. I can feel when I need an adjustment right away, and I immediately feel better every time. My quality of life has changed and it’s nice to have someone I fully trust that helps keep my head on straight so I can give care to my patients too! I’m grateful to the entire staff for always being so kind, welcoming, and working with my schedule! Thank you 🙏

If you are struggling with cervical, back or shoulders issues I highly recommend Dr. Lin. I am very thankful to have found him. What really sets DrLin apart is his approach to chiropractic care. Rather than the traditional “cracking” or adjustments, he uses a specialized tool, a more scientific targeted approach. I have received tremendous improvement in my back pain. His staff is equally impressive. They are professional, kind and welcoming. I would absolutely recommend Dr. Lin and his team to any one looking for knowledgeable and compassionate chiropractic care. If you’re pregnant, go see Dr. Lin! He is Webster certified and helped keep my body aligned throughout pregnancy so my baby could stay in an optimal position. A few times she shifted, and after an adjustment she’d be head down again within hours. I even went into labor about two hours after my last adjustment! Dr. Lin is so calm and gentle, and his entire team is wonderful. It honestly felt like visiting friends every week.
