Research Corner: MIGRAINES

April 8, 2025 By Dr. Kevin Lin

Could Your Migraines Be Coming from Your Neck? A Groundbreaking Study Says Yes
By Dr. Kevin Lin | Precision Chiropractic

If you’ve ever suffered from migraines, you know they’re more than just “bad headaches.” The pounding pain, sensitivity to light and sound, and nausea can be completely debilitating. And if you’re like many people, you’ve probably tried everything—medications, diet changes, stress reduction—with little lasting relief.

But what if the root cause of your migraines isn’t in your head at all?

A compelling study published in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine explored a lesser-known, yet powerful approach: correcting the alignment of the top bone in your neck—called the atlas vertebra—and the results were nothing short of remarkable.

What the Study Looked At

Researchers followed 11 patients who suffered from migraines—some for years. These participants underwent a specific chiropractic technique focused solely on realigning the atlas vertebra, which sits at the very top of the spine and supports the skull.

Why the atlas? This small bone has a big job. When it’s misaligned, it can affect blood flow, nerve function, and cerebrospinal fluid movement, all of which play critical roles in brain health and pain perception.

The Results: Real Relief

After just 8 weeks of care with no drugs or other interventions, patients reported:

  • Fewer migraines (from an average of 14.5 days/month to just 8.7 days/month)
  • Less intense pain
  • Shorter migraine duration
  • Improved quality of life

And here’s the kicker: these results came from addressing just one area—the upper cervical spine. There were no pills, no injections, and no major lifestyle overhauls.

Why This Matters

For migraine sufferers, hope can sometimes feel out of reach. But this study offers a new perspective—one that considers how the alignment of your spine may be affecting your nervous system, and ultimately, your health.

At Precision Chiropractic, we specialize in the very same technique used in this study. Our gentle, non-invasive adjustments focus on restoring balance to the upper cervical spine, allowing your body to heal and function the way it was meant to.

Could an Atlas Misalignment Be Causing Your Migraines?

If you’ve been living with migraines and haven’t had your upper cervical spine evaluated, you might be missing a crucial piece of the puzzle.

We’d love to sit down with you, hear your story, and see if upper cervical care could be the solution you’ve been looking for.

Your path to migraine relief could start at the top—literally.

Clearing Your Head: How CSF Obstruction Affects Cognitive Function

Many people experience brain fog—that frustrating sensation of mental cloudiness, difficulty concentrating, and sluggish thinking. While occasional brain fog happens to everyone, persistent cognitive issues may signal something deeper going on. One often overlooked factor is cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow and its relationship to the upper cervical spine.

Understanding Cerebrospinal Fluid: Your Brain’s Cushion and Cleansing System

Cerebrospinal fluid is a clear, colorless liquid that surrounds your brain and spinal cord. This remarkable fluid serves several vital functions:

  • Protecting your brain by acting as a shock absorber
  • Delivering nutrients to neural tissue
  • Removing waste products from the brain
  • Regulating intracranial pressure
  • Supporting proper brain function and cognition

When CSF flows freely, it helps maintain optimal brain health. However, when this flow becomes obstructed, cognitive problems can emerge.

The Connection Between CSF Obstruction and Cognitive Decline

Research has increasingly shown links between impaired CSF flow and various cognitive symptoms. When CSF circulation is compromised, several issues can develop:

  1. Waste Buildup: CSF plays a crucial role in the glymphatic system, which removes metabolic waste products from the brain. When flow is restricted, these toxins can accumulate.
  2. Reduced Nutrient Delivery: Brain cells may not receive adequate nutrition when CSF flow is compromised.
  3. Pressure Changes: Altered CSF dynamics can affect intracranial pressure, potentially impacting neural function.

The resulting symptoms often include:

  • Persistent brain fog
  • Memory difficulties
  • Concentration problems
  • Reduced cognitive processing speed
  • Mental fatigue
  • Headaches

These symptoms can significantly impact quality of life and productivity.

How Upper Cervical Spine Misalignment Affects CSF Flow

The upper cervical spine—particularly the atlas (C1) and axis (C2) vertebrae—has a unique anatomical relationship with CSF circulation. These vertebrae sit at the junction where your brain connects to your spinal cord, a critical area for CSF flow.

Several mechanisms can explain how upper cervical misalignment might restrict CSF flow:

  • Direct mechanical obstruction: Misaligned vertebrae may physically compress areas where CSF circulates.
  • Dural tension: The dura mater (protective covering around the brain and spinal cord) attaches to the upper cervical vertebrae. Misalignment can create tension in this tissue, potentially restricting CSF movement.
  • Vascular effects: The vertebral arteries pass through the cervical vertebrae. Misalignment might affect blood flow, which in turn influences CSF production and absorption.

Common causes of upper cervical misalignment include:

  • Poor posture (especially forward head posture)
  • Whiplash injuries
  • Falls or impacts to the head/neck
  • Repetitive stress
  • Congenital anomalies

Restoring CSF Flow Through Upper Cervical Care

Upper cervical chiropractic care focuses specifically on detecting and correcting misalignments in the atlas and axis vertebrae. Unlike traditional chiropractic approaches, upper cervical techniques typically involve:

  • Precise analysis using specialized imaging
  • Gentle, specific adjustments (often involving little or no “cracking”)
  • Focus on long-term structural correction rather than temporary symptom relief

When proper alignment is restored, several positive changes may occur:

  1. Improved CSF dynamics: Research suggests that correcting upper cervical misalignments may help normalize CSF flow patterns.
  2. Reduced neurological irritation: Proper alignment can decrease pressure on nerves and blood vessels in this critical area.
  3. Enhanced overall posture: When the head and neck are properly aligned, the entire spine often follows suit.

Many patients report improvements in cognitive function following upper cervical care, including:

  • Clearer thinking
  • Improved memory
  • Better concentration
  • Reduced brain fog
  • Enhanced mental energy

Supporting CSF Health Beyond Spinal Adjustments

While upper cervical care can be valuable for addressing structural factors affecting CSF flow, several complementary approaches may further support cognitive health:

  • Stay hydrated: Adequate water intake supports proper CSF production.
  • Regular movement: Physical activity promotes CSF circulation.
  • Quality sleep: The glymphatic system is most active during deep sleep.
  • Proper ergonomics: Maintaining good posture throughout the day reduces strain on the upper cervical spine.
  • Stress management: Chronic stress can affect CSF dynamics and brain function.

Conclusion: A Clearer Path Forward

If you’re experiencing persistent brain fog, memory issues, or other cognitive symptoms, considering the health of your cerebrospinal fluid system may provide valuable insights. Upper cervical care offers a non-invasive approach that addresses a potential root cause of these symptoms.

While more research is needed to fully understand all aspects of this relationship, many people report significant improvements in mental clarity following proper care of the upper cervical spine. By restoring alignment in this critical area, you may help your brain’s natural cleansing and nourishing systems work more effectively, potentially clearing away the fog that’s been clouding your thinking.

Fix Your Digestion From The Top Down

March 13, 2025 By Dr. Kevin Lin

Have you ever wondered why your stomach seems to have a mind of its own? For many of us, digestive issues can feel like an unpredictable roller coaster that affects every aspect of our lives. From missing social events to planning our days around bathroom access, digestive problems can take control of how we live.

Recently, I treated a 10-year-old boy whose story touched my heart. Despite taking strong laxatives, he struggled with severe constipation that was affecting his ability to enjoy school and play with friends. As a child, he shouldn’t have had to worry about these adult problems – he should have been focused on having fun and being a kid. Through upper cervical care, we were able to help his body restore its natural function, and today he’s back to enjoying life without the burden of digestive issues.

The Brain-Gut Highway: More Connected Than You Think

Think of your nervous system like a super-highway, with your brain sending important messages down through your spine to every part of your body – including your digestive system. The upper cervical spine (the top two bones in your neck) is like the main junction of this highway. When these bones are misaligned, it’s like having a traffic jam that disrupts the flow of these crucial signals.

Imagine trying to drive through a city where the main traffic light is malfunctioning. Everything backs up, causing chaos throughout all the surrounding streets. Similarly, when your upper cervical spine is misaligned, it can create a “traffic jam” of nerve signals, affecting how your digestive system functions.

How Upper Cervical Care Makes a Difference

Unlike traditional chiropractic care, upper cervical care focuses specifically on the critical connection between your brain and body through precise adjustments of the top two vertebrae in your neck. This area is particularly important because:

1. It houses the brainstem, which controls many of your body’s automatic functions, including digestion
2. These vertebrae protect vital nerve pathways that influence your entire digestive system
3. Misalignments here can affect your whole body’s ability to function properly

Think of it like fixing the foundation of a house. You can patch the walls and repair the roof, but if the foundation is crooked, those problems will keep coming back. Upper cervical care addresses the root cause rather than just managing symptoms.

What This Means for Your Digestive Health

When your upper cervical spine is properly aligned, your body can better:
– Process food and absorb nutrients
– Maintain regular bowel movements
– Control inflammation in the digestive tract
– Regulate stomach acid production
– Support healthy gut bacteria balance

The Natural Approach

The beauty of upper cervical care is that it doesn’t require medications or invasive procedures. Instead, we work with your body’s natural healing abilities by removing interference in your nervous system. It’s like clearing a clogged pipe – once the blockage is removed, everything can flow normally again.

Taking the First Step

If you’re struggling with digestive issues, your problem might actually start at the top of your spine, not in your gut. Through gentle, precise adjustments of the upper cervical spine, we can help your body restore its natural balance and healing ability.

Don’t let digestive problems control your life any longer. Whether you’re dealing with chronic issues like our young patient was, or experiencing occasional digestive discomfort, upper cervical care might be the missing piece in your health puzzle.

Contact our office today to schedule a consultation and learn how upper cervical care could help restore your digestive health naturally.

Is Your Neck Choking You?

February 26, 2025 By Dr. Kevin Lin

Respiratory Challenges and the Role of Upper Cervical Chiropractic

Breathing is a fundamental part of life, yet many people underestimate the role of the cervical spine in respiratory health. The shape and alignment of the cervical spine, particularly the upper cervical region, have a profound influence on breathing efficiency and overall respiratory function. When the natural curve of the cervical spine is compromised, it can lead to significant respiratory challenges. Fortunately, upper cervical chiropractic care offers a non-invasive solution to address these issues and promote better breathing.

The Connection Between Cervical Spine and Breathing

The cervical spine, especially the upper cervical region, is closely linked to the body’s respiratory mechanics. Here’s how:

  1. Phrenic Nerve Function: The phrenic nerve, which controls the diaphragm (the primary muscle of respiration), originates from the cervical spine (C3-C5). Any misalignment in this region can irritate or compress the nerve, affecting diaphragm function.
  2. Postural Influence: Loss of cervical lordosis or forward head posture can restrict the rib cage’s ability to expand fully, reducing lung capacity and leading to shallow breathing.
  3. Muscle Strain: Misalignment in the cervical spine increases tension in the accessory breathing muscles, such as the scalenes and sternocleidomastoid, making breathing less efficient.
  4. Airway Patency: Abnormal cervical alignment can contribute to airway obstruction, exacerbating conditions like snoring or sleep apnea.

Respiratory Challenges Associated with Cervical Misalignment

When the cervical spine is misaligned, individuals may experience:

  • Reduced lung capacity and shallow breathing.
  • Difficulty engaging the diaphragm fully during respiration.
  • Increased reliance on accessory breathing muscles, leading to neck and upper back pain.
  • Exacerbation of respiratory conditions, including asthma and sleep apnea.

How Upper Cervical Chiropractic Can Help

Upper cervical chiropractic care focuses on the precise alignment of the atlas (C1) and axis (C2) vertebrae. These vertebrae play a pivotal role in supporting the head, protecting the spinal cord, and maintaining the natural curve of the cervical spine. Through gentle, targeted adjustments, upper cervical chiropractic can:

  1. Optimize Phrenic Nerve Function: Correcting misalignments can reduce irritation to the phrenic nerve, improving diaphragm function and promoting deeper, more efficient breathing.
  2. Restore Postural Balance: Addressing forward head posture helps restore the natural cervical curve, allowing the rib cage to expand properly during inhalation.
  3. Alleviate Muscle Tension: By reducing strain on the accessory breathing muscles, chiropractic care can enhance overall respiratory mechanics and reduce discomfort.
  4. Enhance Airway Patency: Proper cervical alignment can improve airway function, reducing symptoms of conditions like snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.

A Holistic Approach to Respiratory Health

Upper cervical chiropractic care not only addresses the underlying structural issues affecting breathing but also promotes overall wellness. Patients often report improved respiratory function, reduced tension, and enhanced quality of life after receiving care.

If you’re experiencing respiratory challenges or struggling with related conditions, consulting an upper cervical chiropractor may provide the relief and support you need. With a focus on restoring alignment and optimizing nervous system function, upper cervical chiropractic offers a natural and effective solution to breathe easier and live healthier.

A few thoughts on the New Year…

January 7, 2025 By Dr. Kevin Lin

Instead of resolutions for this New Year consider picking a theme!

Choosing a theme for the new year instead of traditional resolutions offers several benefits, especially for those seeking a more flexible and holistic approach to personal growth:

1. Flexibility and Adaptability

  • A theme, like “Growth,” “Balance,” or “Exploration,” provides a broad focus that can adapt to changing circumstances throughout the year. Resolutions often feel rigid and binary—either achieved or failed—whereas a theme allows for continuous progress.

2. Guidance, Not Pressure

  • A theme acts as a guiding principle rather than a strict goal, reducing the pressure to meet specific benchmarks. It allows for reflection and intention-setting without the guilt of not hitting precise targets.

3. Encourages Holistic Growth

  • Themes can encompass multiple areas of life (e.g., career, relationships, health) and promote interconnected improvements. For example, “Harmony” could guide you to balance work-life priorities, nurture relationships, and maintain self-care.

4. Focus on Process, Not Outcome

  • Resolutions often emphasize results (e.g., “Lose 20 pounds”), which can lead to frustration if progress is slow. A theme shifts the focus to the journey (e.g., “Health”), encouraging sustainable habits and mindset changes.

5. Builds Resilience

  • Life is unpredictable, and resolutions can feel irrelevant if circumstances change. A theme can adapt and remain relevant, helping you stay grounded and motivated through challenges.

6. Simplicity and Clarity

  • A single word or phrase is easier to remember and internalize than a list of specific resolutions. It serves as a compass for decision-making, aligning actions with your overarching intent.

7. Fosters Creativity and Exploration

  • A theme encourages you to think creatively about how it can manifest in your life. For example, “Adventure” could mean travel, trying new hobbies, or simply stepping outside your comfort zone in everyday life.

8. Minimizes All-or-Nothing Thinking

  • Resolutions often foster a pass/fail mindset, while a theme allows room for incremental progress and acknowledges small wins, fostering a sense of accomplishment throughout the year.

Examples:

  • Instead of resolving to “Read 30 books,” a theme like “Learning” lets you embrace all forms of knowledge—books, podcasts, courses, or experiences.
  • Instead of “Exercise five times a week,” a theme like “Vitality” could encompass movement, better sleep, or mindful eating.

By choosing a theme, you create a framework for intentional living that evolves with you, rather than feeling boxed in by rigid expectations. I know a lot of us are hoping for a healthier year in 2025, by picking a theme to start the year you will be giving yourself a awesome start and framework for success!

Not Uncommon , But It doesn’t mean its Normal.

November 18, 2024 By Dr. Kevin Lin

Common vs. Normal

My favorite part of the consultation process with a new patient is reviewing their questionnaire and learning more about their health history.

One interesting thing I’ve noticed over the course of thousands of patient consultations is the thin but meaningful line between what’s common and what’s normal.

For instance, I might ask a patient if they’ve experienced headaches or migraines, and often I’ll hear something like, “Oh, just my normal headaches.”

This response suggests that headaches have become their norm—a situation where something common has been mistaken for normal.

But is it normal to have headaches?

No!

Headaches are a sign that something is off. Could it be a vision issue? High blood pressure? Sinus pressure? While the root cause might vary, one thing remains true: it’s not normal. Headaches may be common, but they are not healthy or normal!

We shouldn’t get so used to pain that we allow it to become part of our everyday lives.

We love hearing from our patients when they tell us, “I didn’t realize how bad it had gotten—I feel better than I have in years!”

Don’t let years go by before taking action. Address those common but unhealthy issues now.

Whether it’s taking care of your spine and nervous system with us or seeking help from another healthcare professional, take the first step to prioritize your health today.

Healing is slow and boring

September 23, 2024 By Dr. Kevin Lin

Healing is Boring and Slow

In a world of Amazon Prime, DoorDash, and Netflix, we get what we want—instantaneously, if not very quickly. This is a wonder and a testament to the advances we’ve made technologically in our modern world. However, the “fast pace” of our lives distorts our expectations of natural processes, such as healing.

A baby ideally needs to be in the womb for nine months. A fruit tree requires many seasons before bearing fruit. Yet when we encounter an illness or health challenge, we often look for instant results. Unfortunately, this leads us to make choices based on the desire to feel better quickly, which can ultimately set us astray.

We conflate the alleviation of symptoms with actual healing. Sometimes that’s okay. If you have a big family vacation coming up or an important project that needs to be completed, temporary relief from pain can be very valuable.

However, it is not a sustainable or viable long-term strategy for health. Masking pain and symptoms without addressing the root cause will lead to further deterioration.

Our office is designed around this founding principle: there is a root cause, and we are committed to identifying and correcting it. This process can be tedious and slow, but at the end of the day, the lasting results from true healing are priceless and worth the effort.

I started seeing Dr. Lin almost two years ago and the difference he has made with my headaches is truly remarkable. I had migraines often when I first started seeing him, and although my headaches haven’t fully subsided that’s partially due the physical position I’m in while doing my work; however, I find going once a week is incredibly helpful and makes it manageable. I can feel when I need an adjustment right away, and I immediately feel better every time. My quality of life has changed and it’s nice to have someone I fully trust that helps keep my head on straight so I can give care to my patients too! I’m grateful to the entire staff for always being so kind, welcoming, and working with my schedule! Thank you 🙏
